Classes

Lil’ Dragon Jiu Jitsu – Ages 4-6

Little Dragons is our introductory program for the junior jitsers! Children play games, learn basic tumbling, and have a great time learning how to use their bodies! This program also teaches the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu through a series of games created by the Gracie Family at their gym in Torrence, CA. Kids practice the Steam Roller, the Shark Bite, Crocodile Control and more. The ten games they master are fun and exciting, and at the same time teach them the basics that will take them through adult black belt and beyond.

Youth Jiu Jitsu – Ages 7 & up

This exciting program is based on the Gracie Junior Combatives course. Children learn 38 different techniques, including basic sweeps and submissions, in a fun and safe environment. They also begin working the more detailed Pedro Sauer curriculum, which will carry them into their adult years. Children can achieve the level of four-stripe green belt in this class provided they start young enough. Plus, if they have enough hours, they can move straight to blue belt at age 16.

Adult Jiu Jitsu Ages 13 & up

Adult Jiu Jitsu is our all-levels adult/teen BJJ program.  Each class is one hour long and teaches a number of different Jiu Jitsu techniques, from Helio Gracie’s stand-up self-defense to beginner and advanced techniques refined by Rickson Gracie and Pedro Sauer.  Students will also learn modern sport-style techniques, wrestling and judo basics, takedowns and more.  No matter who you are, you can gain confidence and learn how to protect yourself, both on the feet and on the ground.

Meet our Instructors

Bryan Alvarez

2nd Degree Black Belt – Head Jiu Jitsu Instructor

Bryan runs the BJJ program at EKJJ and is among a handful of instructors worldwide to have received all of his belts from eight degree red and black belt Master Pedro Sauer. Master Sauer received his black belt directly from Gracie Jiu Jitsu founder, Helio Gracie and his son Rickson. In addition to Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Bryan was a state and regional champion gymnast in his teens and was a pro-wrestler for nearly 20 years. Outside of class, Bryan works as a nationally-syndicated radio show host for “Wrestling Observer Live” on Sirius Satellite Radio and the Sports Byline USA Radio Network.

Matthew Hill

Black Belt – Adult Jiu Jitsu Instructor

Matthew Hill received his black belt in 2014 from Professor Micah Reyes at Gracie Barra Ballard in Seattle, WA. His martial arts practice is focused on pedagogy, with an emphasis on the basic physical principles that inform a deep understanding of the art of Jiu-Jitsu. Off the Mats, Matthew is a freelance writer and content provider, professional cycling coach and bike fit specialist, and an instructor at the prestigious Slowtwitch FIST school. He has worked with clients at all levels of sport, from absolute beginner to World Champion level, and is Safesport certified. An accomplished bike racer himself, Matthew has won multiple district and national championships in numerous disciplines of the sport. Matthew was the owner/operator of the repair facility at the legendary Bass Northwest, a touring guitar tech, and held many other positions during his tenure in the music industry, which saw him running the repair department for a chain of stores in NY while still in his teens. Yes, there are a lot of stories…

Chris Simpliciano

Brown Belt – Adult Jiu Jitsu Instructor

“Hawaiian” Chris is a brown belt under Bryan. He started BJJ in 2012 as a fun way to exercise and was instantly hooked. Chris’ classes are a blend of traditional and modern techniques taught in his laid-back Hawaiian style – perfect for practitioners of all levels. His favorite part about teaching is seeing everyone progress on the mats from beginners to upper belts. Outside of Jiu Jitsu, Chris is a structural engineer and lives in Kenmore with his family.

Beau Richards

Purple Belt – Head Youth Jiu Jitsu Instructor & Chief Operations Officer

Beau started training in May 2016 and is currently a purple belt under Bryan Alvarez. When he is not training, Beau is the head instructor for the Lil’ Dragons and Youth Jiu Jitsu programs at EKJJ. He also handles the day to day operations of the gym; making sure everything runs smoothly. If you have received an email or spoken to someone from the gym, it was probably him! His greatest joy is helping shape the young men and women in the classes into better people and helping them discover a sense of purpose and responsibility in their lives. Beau loves to learn and is always looking for ways to continually better his life and the lives of the people around him.

James Brown

Purple Belt – Youth Jiu Jitsu Instructor/Head Wrestling Instructor

A proud husband and father of 3, all of whom train at EKJJ, James’ martial arts journey has spanned over 20 years. A US Army OIF V + VI Veteran, James came to EKJJ with 2 stripes on his white belt in March of 2016 and has proudly trained and competed under Bryan ever since. Now a purple belt, James brings a wealth of grappling and self-defense knowledge to the gym and is a phenomenal instructor.
